About me

I was born in Lima, Peru. I have a BA and an MA in sociology from University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Currently I am PhD candidate at International Development Studies, Department of Society and Globalisation, Roskilde University.

Current research

I am currently working on my PhD project with the tentative title “Transforming Public Space: Citizenship, Participation and Local Radio in Marginal Urban Communities – The case of Huaycan and Radio Enmanuel”.

Loudspeakers in the street, Huaycan
Loudspeakers in the street, Huaycan

This project is about the challenge and possibilities of a popular radio in transforming public space in a poor urban community. It is also about the citizens’ struggle to be recognized as citizens by the authorities and the role the radio plays within these processes. It is a multidisciplinary project between political sociology, media sociology and development studies. The interest is to study the local media and to challenge some idealised ideas about participation and its possibilities for the citizen-making of the poor.

Research interests

As my background is sociology I have broad interests within social science. I am interested in relations and discourses between north and south. In my MA thesis I worked on some persistent discourses about “uncivilised” people and society of poor countries embodied in current Danish travel TV-programs. I am also interested in local and mainstream media in South American countries and the advantages that proper media regulations can give to the social and political development of these societies. Finally I have in my work constantly had focus on ethnic and gender differences as tools for discrimination.
