I work as associate professor at Malmö University, affiliated with the Department of Media and Communication Studies. I hold a Ph.D. degree from the Department of History, University of Toronto, Canada (2005). Academically, I focus on media representations of minorities, and I work with representations of gender, race and sexuality. I am interested in how these representations play into constructions of identities and nationalities, as well as into constructions of normality, norms, and power. Theoretically, I draw upon intersectionality, post-colonial theory, queer theory, feminism, as well as media and cultural theories. I am teaching at the Communication for Development program at Malmö University. I am also participating in a large EU-funded project on immigration, gender, and veiling. Here I research representations of Muslim veils and veiling and investigate how these representations function as tools in the construction of European identities; I also look into how the representations function as mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion of minorities in Europe, especially in Denmark. I am one of the coordinators and founders of the Nordic network MigraNord; a network of scholars working with media and racial/ethnic minorities, funded by Nordforsk. Furthermore, I have the Copenhagen based consultant company Q & A (www.rikkeandreassen.dk), which works with questions of communication and discrimination. I aim at combining my academic work with an activist approach to the society I live in.
