MEDIeA

MEDIeA is the acronym for “Media, Empowerment & Democracy in East Africa”, a collaborative research program between Denmark, Kenya and Tanzania, hosted by Ørecomm. MEDIeA has received a grant of DKK 5 M (EUR 0.7 M) from DANIDA for activities in 2009-2012.

Three universities –one Danish and two East African– have teamed up for the program: Roskilde University(RUC) from Denmark, the University of Nairobi from Kenya, and the University of Dar es Salaam from Tanzania. The program will comprise six individual research projects with a Kenya focus and a Tanzania focus, supplemented by an International Reference Group of leading experts in media, empowerment and democracy –theorists and practitioners. Dissemination, capacity building and policy dialogue are additional components of the program.

Principal investigator is Thomas Tufte (Roskilde University). Other participants  are Winnie V. Mitullah (University of Nairobi), Datius Rweyemamu (University of Dar es Salaam) and Norbert Wildermuth (University of Southern Denmark).
