New book:
Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media

by Ørecomm on 2010 December 18 17:31

The Encyclopedia of Social Movement Media was edited by John D.H. Downing, now guest professor at Aarhus University, one of the founders of OURMedia. This is literally a big book, 600+ pages with 250 entries on social movement media, from graffiti, popular song, dance and street theatre to print, film, broadcasting and the Internet. About seventy countries are represented, spread over the past 100 years. About half of the entries were contributed by women. There are also longer articles on some issues – e.g. environmentalist, human rights, performance art, feminist, youth, and Indigenous peoples’ media – as well as on terminology (‘alternative’, ‘community’, ‘Third Sector’, ‘citizens’, ‘participatory’).

Read more at the publisher’s page or at the Amazon bookstore, where you may “look inside” at the list of entries and index.
