Colleagues in ComDev:
CCMS, Durban, South Africa
Ørecomm and its researchers work in close cooperation with colleagues in many countries. We invite these colleagues to introduce their institutions and organisations briefly in this space, and if you are not already there, to be included in our list of links (see menu item, or down on this page).
First out is Eliza Govender from University of KwaZulu-Natal:
The Centre for Culture, Communication & Society at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa has established itself as the premier centre for development and communication research and post-graduate study in the region over the past two decades. The centre has been at the forefront of Health communication and research for many years, having had direct involvement with many key programmes related to initiatives around the HIV/AIDS pandemic. These include partnerships with DramAidE (Drama in Education), an NGO working with communities using drama and performance art to address HIV and AIDS, ARROW, (Art and Reconciliation around the World) using art for peace and reconciliation and CAP (Culture an Arts programme of HIVAN) working with visual arts in disadvantaged communities. The purpose of these partnerships are to provide our post graduate students with a research site and also provide our partners with opportunities to link the latest research with their practice/interventions.
The field of cultural and media studies offers theoretical opportunities to explore and critique contemporary social issues, and how people make meaning within their specific cultural contexts. In addition critically focused courses at Honours and Masters levels ensure the ongoing relevance of both the programmes and the research to live issues in the wider community and indeed, the world at large. The Centre has three research tracks each linked to postgraduate courses and in some cases student bursaries. CCMS has over the years become an internationally recognized Centre for development and health communication attracting African scholarships from all over the continent and other international doctorate students to its graduate programme.
