New toolkit: Media and Governance

The World Bank has released a new toolkit, “Developing Independent Media as an Institution of Accountable Governance: A How-To Guide”.

The book lays out an assessment-to-program design framework for supporting independent media as part of a good governance agenda. Recent discourse has highlighted the crucial role of independent media in underpinning good governance, and many organizations are increasingly interested in supporting independent media programs. At the same time, while many use the media to communicate development messages, fewer are knowledgeable about how to strengthen the media sector itself as an institution of accountability.

… this handbook is designed for those who may be interested in media development programs, but are unclear about the whys, hows, and whens. It will introduce the fundamentals of media development, provide ways to conceptualize and analyze the sector, and help guide programming based on political economy analysis as well as individual country context.
