Ulla Carlsson now on the IPDC council

Professor Ulla Carlsson, director of Nordicom, was recently appointed member of the Intergovernmental Coucil of the UNESCO International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC).

Many issues on today’s global arena concern how media can keep and develop their role as one of the cornerstones of democracy. Ulla Carlsson says:

We face many challenges if we are to handle the complex questions of free speech, especially those concerning freedom of the press. Threats increase towards a credible journalism and against individual journalists through a tougher political censorship, not least on the Internet, and through fundamentalism and criminality, new anti-terrorist laws, increased media concentration and a market-driven journalism undermining ethical norms and self-regulation.
