IAMCR 2016: Application is Open

by Yuliya on 2016 January 26 14:23

The 2016 conference of the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) will be held at the University of Leicester in the UK with a theme Memory, Commemoration and Communication: Looking Back, Looking Forward.  Call for applications is open.

Since Leicester’s Department of Media and Communication celebrates its 50th anniversary, this theme is particularly appropriate for marking 50 years of media and communication studies in Leicester while also anticipating IAMCR’s own 60th anniversary, which will be celebrated in 2017. Last time the conference took place at Leicester 40  years ago.

“The 2016 conference will be considerably larger, representing the growth of media and communication research around the world as well as IAMCR’s growth. Many of our key members have been associated with the University and we look forward to celebrating these historical connections, says IAMCR president Janet Wasko. Due to strong ties to IAMCR, Ørecomm will also have a large presence during the conference.

The conference theme is inspired by the fact that  advancements in technologies have  provided new and innovative opportunities to think how cultural memory is created and preserved. There is a large interest in digitalizing data nowadays. For instance, in the UK  in 2011 a Public Space Project was launched, in which BBC cooperated with various cultural institutions like libraries, galleries and universities to make cultural material publicly and freely available to all.

This topic is also interesting from the aspect of future prospects: how could cultural memory be retold through time and space? What is the relationship between forms of memory and ideas about technologies moving towards the “post-human”? It opens up a field for communication research, reflection and discussion during the IAMCR 2016 conference.

This year’s conference welcomes paper and panel proposals that engage with the way the concepts of memory and commemoration, and the ways the past is (re)mediated, historicised, documented, archived, remembered, forgotten and (re)told. It also welcomes submissions which commemorate IAMCR as an organization as well as the contributions its members have made over the years. Submissions might also focus on areas such as:
  • memory and colonialism
  • commemoration of historic events
  • the reproduction of culture through storytelling
  • the media’s role in (re)producing cultural narratives and commemorations

Both individual and panel submissions are welcome. The deadline for submission of abstracts is 15 February 2016. For more details on application please visit official website.
