How to navigate easily in tons of material collected during ethnographic research? Join our PhD seminar in Kenya and learn from Kenyan and Scandinavian experts working in the field of media and communication studies.

The PhD seminar is designed to give a hands-on approach to the analysis of ethnographic field material within media and communication studies. The seminar is co-organized by Moi University and the research project Critical Perspectives on New Media and Processes of Social Change in the Global South, and sponsored by the Nordic Research Councils for the Humanities.

What does the course offer? It’s a mix of presentations, group discussions and Q&A sessions that altogether will help participants answer their individual needs in accordance with their ethnographic research interests.

Who is the target audience? PhD students from East Africa and the Nordic countries who have already conducted their qualitative ethnographic fieldwork within media and communication studies as well as those who begin or are already analysing their data.

Are there participation requirements? Three weeks before the course each participant will receive readings needed for the course in order to be able to participate actively in the course talks. During the course they will present 10-12 pages papers to give a framework of their research in ongoing PhD projects. PhD students will work in teams to collaborate and discuss ideas. Moreover, each one will serve as an opponent for one fellow participant’s paper.

How to apply? Those PhD students who are interested in applying should submit an application paper. Deadline is 4th February. It contains the following:  a half page motivation letter, a two-page PhD project description and an abstract for the paper (emphasizing the analysis of the ethnographic research), which will be presented during the course.
